Silver for Shuttleworth Young Gardeners

Wednesday 19 April 2017

On Friday 24 March 2017 the Shuttleworth College team were awarded a Silver medal in the annual Ideal Home Show ‘Young Gardeners of the Year’ competition.

The annual competition, now in its seventh year, is organised by TV gardener David Domoney in association with the Prince’s Foundation for Building Community and celebrates young ‘green’ talent. Shuttleworth College had stiff competition as the UK’s leading horticultural colleges went head-to-head to create a show-stopping, sustainable garden that was visited by a quarter of a million visitors at the show.

This year’s focus was front gardens and The Prince’s Foundation set clear guidelines based on organic and sustainable principles. The Young Gardeners were tasked with creating a show garden that captured the imagination and inspired the judges and visitors, with clever plant association.

This year’s Show Gardens were judged by an expert panel, which included horticultural industry leaders, home and garden magazine editors and acclaimed garden designers. The students performed really well across the week receiving high praise for their front garden design and won Silver Gilt in the competition while Writtle College received the Best in Show award.

The competition offered students a great opportunity to showcase their work and celebrate the best of British young talent in garden design and build. All the gardens have been featured in David Domoney’s blog giving inspirational ideas for front gardens.
