Aerial Cutting of Trees using Free-Fall Techniques NPTC Level 3 Award (CS39)

The Chainsaws and Related Operations courses offer a range of practical skills and assessments covering all aspects of chainsaw work. Gaining an NPTC qualification will demonstrate that you have practical skills, technical knowledge and ability which have been independently and reliably assessed. This intensive two-day chainsaw course will cover chainsaw operations from a rope and harness and is delivered by one of Shuttleworth’s qualified instructors.

Entry requirements

This course is suitable if you have a good level of physical fitness and have completed the Chainsaw Maintenance & Crosscutting NPTC Level 2 Award (previously known as CS30), Felling & Processing Trees up to 380mm NPTC Level 3 Award (previously known as CS31), and Climb Trees & Perform Aerial Rescue NPTC Level 2 Certificate (previously known as CS38).

Course content

Units on this course include:

  • Risk assessment & emergency procedures
  • Equipment selection
  • Preparation and inspection
  • Chainsaw operation in the crown of the tree.

On completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Identify, inspect and comment upon key parts of the equipment to be used
  • Prepare the equipment for use ensuring the safety of themselves, other people and the environment
  • Operate a chainsaw whilst maintaining a working position within the crown of a tree using a rope and harness

You can also study the NPTC Certificate of Competence as an additional course.

Assessment methods

The assessment for NPTC course normally takes place 10-14 days after the initial training and is a full day, the price is included in the course price.

Further study and career options

This course will be beneficial to your career if you are working in the horticulture or arboriculture industries, or if you are self-employed as a tree surgeon.

Additional information

To take part in this course you must bring PPE (personal protective equipment) and other tools and equipment as listed on the joining instructions. You can also view the PPE and tools list here.
