Professional Tree Inspection Lantra Awards

The course will give you the opportunity to study the identification and interpretation of signs of ill health and structural failure across a wide range of tree species and circumstances. You should be thoroughly experienced in carrying out tree inspection and survey.

Entry requirements

To begin this course you should have a minimum arboricultural qualification at Level 3 or equivalent, plus five years' experience in carrying out tree survey and inspection. You should be an experienced and qualified arboriculturalist with an in-depth knowledge of plant and arboriculture science, including a thorough knowledge of wood and decaying fungi.

Course content

During the course you will study the following topics:

  • Legal framework
  • The tree as a dynamic living system
  • An undamaged self-optimised structure
  • The law of the minimal lever arm and strategy of flexibility
  • Visual tree assessment (VTA)
  • Principle fungal decay organisms
  • Mechanical symptoms of defects
  • Tree inspection equipment
  • Making and writing management recommendations
  • Practical exercises
  • Workshop sessions
  • Hazard evaluation
  • VTA tree walk
  • Introduction to decay detection and measuring equipment
  • Assessment and final round up.

To take part in this course you must bring PPE (personal protective equipment) and other tools and equipment as listed on the joining instructions. You can also view the PPE and tools list here.
