You’re hired! A career in Business is waiting for you…
Another series of The Apprentice is nearly at an end. We’ve seen the candidates organise an exclusive event, sell products at a Boat Show, set up an advertising campaign for jeans, design and sell their own brand of sweets and work a night shift – all in a bid to impress Lord Sugar with their business acumen. There’s been plenty of firing but who will finally be hired?
Just like the range of activities that the candidates are tasked with, the business sector is hugely diverse. If you choose to work in business, you won't need to restrict yourself to that sector, as companies across all industries require staff in business roles.
Full-time Business Administration student Leah says: “Lots of my friends had recommended Bedford College to me and I knew I wanted to study Business because I wanted to learn more about all the different areas such as human resources, accounting, marketing and business ethics.”
In 2015 there were more than five million businesses in the UK (House of Commons Library, Business Statistics Briefing Paper). Our own Business apprentices work with some exciting companies including Acuigen of Cranfield, who work with law firms around the world and recently won the Business Innovation Award at the Bedfordshire on Sunday Business Awards.
We also have Business apprentices with Bedford-based Hybrid Air Vehicles who are working on possibly one of the most exciting aviation developments in the world today: the Airlander.
Winner of the BBC’s Young Apprentice, Ashleigh Porter-Exley, was our guest speaker at the Apprenticeships Graduation Ceremony. Having studied Business Administration and Accountancy at college she is now starting her new business funded with £25,000 from the show. Ashleigh said: “My life would be nothing without business; it’s what I was born to do and be.”
Our full-time Business and Accounting students also get to work with impressive companies. All students undertake work experience and this year Ernst & Young LLP, one of the ‘big four’ accounting firms, offered a paid work experience summer programme called Smart Futures from their Luton office.
Students have recently visited Luton Magistrates Court, Westfield and British Airways to help with their units in Customer Services and Law, as well as to Cadbury’s World as part of the Business Ethics unit to find out more about their Fairtrade Cocoa Partnership in Ghana.
And of course, as business skills are needed everywhere, we’ve also been to Woburn Safari Park and Thorpe Park to apply important teamwork skills while watching baby elephants and trying out a few rides!
Our Business department is accredited by professional bodies, including the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT), and the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM). We recently won the national award for AAT Large Provider of the Year, beating competition from across the UK. You can be confident that the skills you will learn have real value in the industry whether you choose an apprenticeship, full-time, part-time or degree-level course with Bedford College.
