Children & Young People Apprenticeship Level 2
This Level 2 Childcare apprenticeship will allow you to develop the skills and knowledge required for working in a child care setting with children aged 0-19 years. It will provide you with a good starting point within the sector, working under supervision (e.g. pre-school assistant, nursery assistant). The introductory units will give you an insight into how children develop and learn, while the choice of pathways can be tailored to meet the vocational area you are working with (social work, early years or schools, for example). You will gain plenty of practical hands-on experience in the workplace and then attend College on a day-release basis every Friday for theory session and to study functional skills, including English and maths.
Entry requirementsGrade requirements:
You will need a minimum of two GCSEs at grades A*-D, including English and maths. An ability to achieve a Level 1 ICT qualification is desirable.
You must be willing to undergo an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
Course contentDuring this apprenticeship you will study a range of topics, including:
- An introduction to communication in children and young people’s settings
- Child and young person development
- Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people
As the Apprenticeship progresses you will be assessed in a number of different ways, including practical demonstrations, observations in the workplace and exams for functional skills.

Further study and career options
Further study: On successful completion you will be able to progress on to the Advanced Level apprenticeship or on to the Early Years Educator Level 3 Diploma as a standalone qualification. Completing a Level 3 qualification will ensure you have the appropriate level of competency, as determined by registration and regulatory requirements.
Future careers: You will be able to move into a full-time role as a pre-school assistant or nursery assistant. Once you have a Level 3 qualification you will be able to move to higher levels of work or work unsupervised, for example as a nursery supervisor, childminder or foster carer.
If you are over 19, your attendance in College will be subject to a functional skills assessment.
