Professional Formation for Teachers and Trainers in the Lifelong Learning and FE Sector (QTLS/ATLS)

This course will support those Lifelong Learning Sector and Further Education (F.E) Teachers, or Trainers who wish to go through the Professional Formation process and gain Qualified Teacher Status for Learning and Skills (QTLS) or Associate Teacher Status for Learning and Skills (ATLS).

Entry requirements

This course is suitable for those Lifelong Learning Sector and F.E Teachers, or Trainers who have completed a CertEd, or PGCE and wish to apply for Qualified Teacher Status (QTLS) and those Teachers, or Trainers who have completed a CTLLS and wish to apply for Associate teacher status (ATLS). Candidates will also need a Level 2 or equivalent qualification in both English and Maths before the application can be made. Candidates must be a member of IfL as this is the awarding institution for QTLS/ATLS.

Course content

The course will be run through three workshops over a period of nine months that coincide with the Institute for Learning (IfL) windows for Professional Formation. The course will allow the learner to go from registering with IfL, expressing Intent, completion of the nine standardised and personalised elements that make up the portfolio, scanning relevant documents and finally declaring suitability to the IfL standards team.

Units include:

  • Expression of Intent
  • Completion of the nine standardised and personalised elements of Professional Formation
  • Declaration of Suitability.

Assessment methods

Completion of an e-portfolio.

Further study and career options

On successful completion you will be qualified to practice as a Teacher, or Trainer in the Lifelong Learning and FE Sector. Further qualifications could allow you to gain a Licence to Practice in Skills for Life (SfL) in which case you will need to gain a Level 5 subject specialism in either Literacy, Numeracy or ESOL.

Additional information

If you were first employed as a teacher after 1 September 2007, and you hold DTLLS or CTLLS, you have a period of five years from the date you were first employed in which to complete the Professional Formation process and obtain QTLS or ATLS (as applicable).

These are the Licence’s to Practice within the F.E sector as a deliverer:

  • Register with IfL
  • Perform basic navigation of Reflect
  • Completion of an Expression of Intent form via Reflect
  • Sending a signed Declaration of Suitability to the IfL Standards team.
